On Friday, the FCSAA released tournament brackets and seeding for the Region VIII Women’s Basketball Championship, and the St. Petersburg College Lady Titans will enter the tournament as the #5 seed after finishing the regular season ranked #5th in the state.
The Lady Titans will match up against the fourth ranked Pioneers of Indian River State College. There is a lot of familiarity with the two teams, as they have met on the court twice this year. The first game took place at the beginning of the season and Indian River beat the Titans 74-70 in Ft. Pierce. SPC outscored the Pioneers in the fourth quarter, 26-17 but ended up coming up short. The two teams met again in January, just prior to the start of conference play. In this game, SPC had a balanced scoring attack with four of five starters scoring in double digits, led by Freshman KaYanti Burden’s 18. The defense was another huge factor in the Titans win, as they held Indian River to 22 percent shooting from the field. This matchup will also see the return of sophomore Myanna Garrett, who missed the previous two games due to injuries.
