Season In Review: A Look Back At The 2022 SPC Titans Baseball

The Titans of St. Petersburg College baseball could define this season as a learning experience with the notion that things will only get better going into next season. Led by Head Coach Jeremy Graf, this team hung in there and played for eachother each and every game right to the very end. The Titans (14-33) finished their season with a 14 game losing streak losing at home to Polk State College 12-0. However, there were several key moments and games throughout the season that the Titans performed at a high level and displayed resillency despite feeling defeated at times.

The Titans started their season in January against Dyersburg State Community College with the Titans getting a win that day 5-0. Centerfielder Logan Sanders led the day with 3 at bats, 2 runs, 2 hits and 2 RBI's followed by Catcher Nicholas Yedman who also had 3 at bats along with 2 runs and 2 hits. Pitcher Channing Young was stellar that day as the junior pitched a shutout through 5 innings of play giving up 2 hits while throwing 7 strikeouts. The Titans went on to lose their remaining 2 games that weekend but, you could sense that the Titans were poised at that time to have a great season.

The Titans were able to start the month of February on a good note by winning at Florida State College of Jacksonville 7-2 where infielder Austin Coultas was the standout of the game. The freshman had 4 at bats with 3 hits and a run with 3 RBI's. Several other Titans earned RBI's in Shortstop Jake Mummau, Third Baseman Jaider Morelos, First Baseman Ben Maskin (2), Infielder Austin Coultas (3), Catcher Nicholas Yedman. The Titans best game of the year came on February 23rd against the Patriots of Central Florida. The Titans hammered the Patriots 15-4 off 12 hits with 2 errors. Shortstop Jake Mummau had a great performance as the freshman from Palm Harbor racked up 3 runs with 3 hits and a pair of RBI's. Pitching was great that day with Ivan Martinez and Tanner Walker both combining for 5 strikeouts. The Titans ended the month of February 7-7 (8-9 overall) and were preparing for their conference schedule in the months of March and April.

The Titans struggled throughout the month of March going 6-11 and losses against conference foes Florida Southwestern State, Hillsborough Community College, Polk State College, and State College of Florida. Their key wins were against the Manatees of SCF winning 12-8 on March 9th and 10-7 six days later, and also picked up a win against the Hawks of Hillsborough 9-8 on a neutral field at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa. The win vs HCC was huge for the Titans heading into their final month of April, but was the last win St. Petersburg College would see. The Titans sturggled mightly in the month of April and had moments to turn things around most notably against SCF on a Monday night when the Titans were down as many as 9 but, came back within 4 to lose 16-12. The Titans were in most of their games in April but, mistakes made by SPC costed them games that were right on the cusp of winning.

While this season was not the way the Titans had hoped they had some standouts that made huge contributions to the baseball program. Pitcher Jared Kapurch was a high leverage pitcher as the sophomore from Worcester, MA pitched in 31 games throughout his career accumulating over 50 innings. Jared is continuing his collegiate career at Worcester State this fall back home in Masschusetts. Infielder Will Bruno led the team in batting averages with .323, on base percentage of .447. Channing Young, whose mother Marylin attended every home game, ended his career at St. Petersburg College totaling 176 innings and had an unbelievable 160 strikeouts. This season alone the junior pitcher had the 4th most innings of any pitcher in the country for junior college baseball with 74.2 innings. Channing finished his career as the 2nd ranked pitcher in the conference in strikeouts with 81. Along with Channing Young, the Titans had another standout pitcher in Ivan Martinez. "Gordo" as his teammates called him totaled 125.2 innings throughout his career at SPC with 110 strikeouts. Martinez is set to attend Webber International University this fall to continue his collegiate career.
