Lady Titans win Suncoast Conference Championship for second straight year

Lady Titans Suncoast Conference Champs

The Lady Titans Volleyball team captured their second consecutive Suncoast Conference victory when they toppled rival Hillsborough Community College Thursday night. The match, a nail biter that went five sets, played out in front of a lively crowd of Titan faithful.

After taking the first set and falling behind in the next two, the Lady Titans rallied to decisively take the final two sets: 25-16 and 25-10.

"They all have a lot of experience playing at a high level," said Head Coach Scott White, now in his 14th season at SPC. "When they get in difficult games, they just play better."

Leading the team in kills with 14 was starter Ana Carolina de Almieda Costa, followed by Beatriz Vieira and Amanda Filippo, each with 11. Giovanna Goncalves led the team in digs with 15, followed by Michelle Valiente with 12. Rafaela Biegelmeyer served up one ace and Kyce Martins led the team in kill percentages at .353.

"They were up and down a little, but they just keep battling  back," White added. "We've been working a lot on the mental side of the game, how to bring out your best, and it's paying off. I'm proud of the way they battle and fight and play one point at a time."

The team next heads to the state tournament at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3 at the Bradenton Civic Center. Officials are organizing buses for those interested in attending the tournament, leaving the St. Petersburg/Gibbs Campus at 11:45 a.m. Friday.
