Lady Titans pull off HUGE upset in Ft. Myers!

Lady Titans pull off HUGE upset in Ft. Myers!

Women’s Basketball Coach Coach Denisha Davidson and the SPC Lady Titans basketball team headed down to Ft. Myers on Tuesday, Nov. 29 to take on the 16th ranked team in the nation, the Buccaneers of Florida Southwestern State College.

SPC headed into this game on a four-game losing streak after the Titans lost two key players to injuries. After falling down 18-6 in the first quarter, the Titans received a major lift from sharpshooter Alexa Kulakowski (Syracuse, NY), who scored 16 points in 19 minutes of playing time. Kulakowski was one of four Lady Titans scoring in double digits, along with Olivia Delancey, Jullie Ruiz-Paneto and Jaylen Ponder. This was Ponder’s eighth double-double in 10 games, bringing her season average to 11 points and 11 rebounds per game.

In a game that saw the Lady Titans down 1 with under a minute left to play, the team relied on defense, rebounding, and knocking down some big free throws to clinch the contest against Florida Southwestern.  Delancey and TaNiya Prior picked up the slack for Ponder, who picked up her fifth foul with just under four minutes left in the game. In the end, SPC was able to get a huge defensive stop with 1.8 seconds left on the clock to earn the 71-70 win. Great job, ladies!
